Cavalry, and served as a sol dier until the end of the war. After leaving college he studied law with Chief Justice Pearson and was hcen sea to practice in January 1870, and has been in continuous practice in Concord since January 17, 1870. He represented Cabarrus county in the State legislature 1874-1875 and was State Senator in 1885 and -again in 1SS0. Since February 4th, 1876, he lias been counsel of the. South ern and old Richmond and Danville Railwav Companies. He married No vember 27, 1894, Mrs. Moselle Foard Ross, daughter of Ma j. Robert Foard. Col. Means was always actively en a;ed in politics and his wisdom" and counsel was often sought by the lead ers of his party. He has represented Cabarrus in both houses of the legis lature and was a member of the State Senate at the time of his death. He has been a member of the Democratic State Executive committee for 29 years and lias-canvassed this confess ional district several times as elector He has been a delegate to the National as follows: . Hendrix . 5.00 7 yesterday afternoon to accom pany the remains to Concord. Mrs. Means, and her son, Mr. J. Lind say Ross, and Mrs. Bettie M. Johnson, were with Col. Means when death oc curred. . Col. Means died gently and peace fully as if falling to sleep. It was thought by those who watched by his bedside that he would live a few hours longer, but he passed quietly away, almost before his loved ones knew it. Col. Means' death was the result of a severe spell of the grippe which he had in January and from which he had never rallied. From the first of his last illness no hope was entertained of his recovery. Col. Means was C5 3rears of age April 7. The ffuneral service will be conduct ed at Central church by Rev. Plato Durham. The following will be the pall bearers : Messrs. D. B. Coltrane, D. A.
